Updating a theme

Updates follow the same flow as the initial install. Go to Settings → Design → Change theme → Upload theme, select the new .zip, and click Activate. Ghost replaces the theme files while leaving your content and all settings intact.

Before you update

Check the theme’s Changelog page for the release you are installing. Breaking changes, if any, are noted there along with any settings that have changed name or been removed.

Custom code edits are overwritten

If you have edited the theme files directly — modified a Handlebars template, adjusted a stylesheet, or changed any file inside the .zip — those edits are lost when you upload the new version. Ghost replaces all theme files on upload.

Keep customizations in Ghost Admin instead:

• Use Settings → Design → Customize for theme settings.
• Use Settings → Code injection for site-wide CSS or JavaScript snippets.

This way your customizations persist across every future update.
